Samsung Electronics has announced that its Bespoke AI Steam robot vacuum cleaner has earned the “PbD” (Privacy by Design) certification, a first for robot vacuum cleaners. This certification, issued by the Personal Information Protection Committee and the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), recognizes the vacuum’s commitment to safeguarding personal information through its entire lifecycle—from planning and manufacturing to disposal.
What is PbD Certification? PbD is a design framework focused on preventing personal information breaches by integrating data protection features throughout a product’s development. It ensures that products are designed and manufactured with personal privacy in mind. This year, the certification scope expanded to include smart home appliances like robot vacuum cleaners, which are often equipped with cameras that can collect personal data.
The certification covers 71 inspection criteria across four main areas:
Personal Information Processing Requirements: Ensures that personal data is only collected for specified purposes and protects it from unnecessary transmission.
Legality of Data Processing: Verifies the compliance of personal data collection and processing with legal standards.
Data Security and Privacy Measures: Ensures that data is secured and protected from breaches.
Organizational Safeguards: Ensures that the organization follows proper security measures to protect data.
Key Features of the Bespoke AI Steam Robot Vacuum Samsung’s Bespoke AI Steam robot vacuum is the first all-in-one robot cleaner in Korea equipped with a water mop steam sterilization function, adding a layer of sanitation while cleaning. It is powered by Samsung Knox, the company’s proprietary security solution, to thoroughly protect users’ personal information. Notably, the vacuum features End-to-End Encryption (E2EE) technology, which ensures that all user data, including images and videos captured by the vacuum, are encrypted. This encryption prevents unauthorized access to personal information even if the server is compromised or the user account is stolen.
Samsung’s Commitment to Privacy and Security Moon Jong-seung, Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Digital Appliances Division, emphasized that Bespoke AI Steam is a product designed to prioritize privacy and security. With the integration of Samsung Knox and robust security protocols, the vacuum ensures that users can enjoy their smart home appliances without concerns over data breaches.
In addition to the PbD certification, the Bespoke AI Steam vacuum also received a “Diamond” rating in IoT security evaluation from UL Solutions in March 2024, recognizing its high security standards. Additionally, it earned the highest security certification for Internet of Things (IoT) devices from the Ministry of Science and ICT and KISA.
As part of its ongoing efforts to promote safe IoT products, Samsung will attach IoT Security Certification Labels to its products, helping consumers easily identify and select devices that meet high security standards.
Samsung is committed to continually enhancing privacy and security measures in its AI-powered home appliances, providing consumers with peace of mind while benefiting from the convenience of connected technology.
