Hyundai and Boston Dynamics Accelerate Atlas Robot Deployment

by BERG

According to Hyundai Motor Group on the 11th, the “All New Atlas” robot of Boston Dynamics, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group, is undergoing training and is scheduled to be put into trial operation at the production site within the year.

On the 5th local time, the video of the artificial intelligence (AI) learning process released by Boston Dynamics showed that Atlas can accurately select the products specified by researchers from various parts and repeatedly carry them to the designated location. The video shows how the Boston Dynamics research team trained Atlas and how to use AI technology. The core of the robot control AI solution lies in the “sequencing” technology, which is the arrangement of a series of task sequences. Atlas relies on camera sensors and AI solutions to successfully complete the sequencing task.

Hyundai Motor Group revealed that Atlas can accurately identify various forms of parts in an environment simulating a dim manufacturing site and respond appropriately in emergencies. In addition, Atlas supports 360-degree rotation, allowing it to adjust its direction faster and use its range of motion efficiently.

Boston Dynamics released a video in November last year showing the process of Atlas carrying engine cover parts to a mobile storage box. At that time, the robot worked like a real worker in the factory, showing its wide application potential and was highly praised. In the new video released about four months later, Atlas shows more advanced capabilities, further raising expectations for improving production efficiency after formal deployment in the future.

Boston Dynamics plans to put the Atlas robot into trial operation at Hyundai Motor Group’s production base before the end of this year. Zachary Jackowski, chief engineer of Boston Dynamics in charge of robot development, said: “If Atlas can take on simple and repetitive tasks such as moving parts, it can reduce the burden on workers and improve production efficiency. Based on Hyundai Motor Group’s manufacturing technology experience, we plan to further develop more innovative robot technology.”

In addition, Boston Dynamics also signed a cooperation agreement with the Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Institute (RAI) last month to jointly promote the development of humanoid robots with reinforcement learning. The two parties intend to jointly optimize the natural mobility of humanoid robots in real environments and improve the efficiency of moving heavy objects.
