Bissell is recalling approximately 3.3 million steam cleaners across North America after reports of dangerous burn hazards linked to the products. This recall affects various models of Bissell’s “Steam Shot Handheld Steam Cleaners,” which have been found to expel hot water or steam during operation or while heating up, posing significant burn risks to users.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, Bissell has been notified of 183 incidents involving these steam cleaners, including 157 cases of minor burns. The breakdown includes 145 injuries reported in the United States and 12 in Canada as of early June, based on data from Health Canada.
Affected consumers are advised to cease using the recalled steam cleaners immediately and contact Bissell, headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for compensation. Bissell is offering either a $60 store credit or a $40 refund (equivalent to CA$82 and CA$55, respectively) for each unit returned.
The recall pertains to steam cleaners manufactured in China, identifiable by specific model numbers available on Bissell’s website. The website also provides guidance on how to register for the recall, cut the product’s cord, and submit photos for verification.
Bissell has emphasized that safety is their top priority and stated that the recall is being conducted “out of an abundance of caution.” The affected steam cleaners were available for purchase at major retailers such as Target and Walmart, as well as online through Bissell’s website and Amazon, from August 2008 through May 2024.
Of the recalled units, approximately 3.2 million were sold in the U.S., and about 355,000 were distributed in Canada.
