Is a Mattress Vacuum Cleaner Worth It? Testing the Lakeland Mattress Vacuum

by BERG

Vacuuming your mattress might not be a regular part of your cleaning routine, but it should be. Dust mites, a leading cause of household allergies in the UK, thrive on dust in mattresses. A mattress vacuum cleaner not only helps tackle these allergens but also prolongs the lifespan of your mattress.

Lakeland offers an entry-level mattress vacuum cleaner that uses vibrations to shake dust mites loose and a UV light to target bacteria below the surface. To determine if it lives up to its promises, I tested the Lakeland Mattress Vacuum across several mattresses in my home.

Right out of the box, I noticed how lightweight and compact the vacuum is—ideal for maneuvering across mattresses. It comes preassembled with the dust bin, filter, and cable in place, and its generous cord length allows flexibility without needing to stay near a plug.

The handle design is ergonomic, with textured grips to prevent slipping during use. However, I was initially skeptical about its suction power given its size.

The vacuum features a vibration mode activated by a button on the handle. This mode agitates dust and mites, making them easier to vacuum. Initially, I thought the button needed to be held continuously, but a single press toggles it on and off.

As I worked through each mattress, the UV light engaged intermittently, only activating when sufficient suction was achieved—a thoughtful safety feature to prevent overexposure.

On a single mattress, minimal dust was collected, but this was expected since smaller beds generally have less accumulation. On a king-size mattress, more dust was gathered, though it remained concentrated on the filter rather than filling the bin.

Using the vacuum was straightforward. Its compact design and front rollers ensured smooth movement across surfaces without snagging. Cleaning my son’s mattress, prioritized due to his dust mite allergy, was effortless. On larger mattresses like my own, the long cord eliminated the need to unplug and reposition.

I also tested it on a mattress topper, which was equally simple to clean. The vacuum’s moderate noise level made the process less intrusive.

While the dust collected was modest, this wasn’t disappointing—it’s reassuring that mattresses don’t harbor the same level of debris as carpets. The clear dustbin allowed me to monitor progress, and the compact size of the bin proved sufficient for its intended purpose.

Cleaning the HEPA filter, which cannot be washed, was easy with a quick tap to remove debris.

The Lakeland Mattress Vacuum is a practical tool for those looking to maintain a cleaner, allergen-free mattress. Its lightweight design, vibration feature, and UV light make it effective, especially for households with allergy sufferers.

Although it doesn’t collect piles of dust, its purpose is clear: it targets the finer debris mattresses hold. At £59.99, it’s an affordable investment for improving sleep hygiene and prolonging mattress life.

If mattress cleanliness has been on your radar, this compact vacuum is worth considering.
