Eco-Friendly Solution to Moss on Patios: White Vinegar as a Safe and Effective Cleaner

by BERG

Moss can quickly become a headache for gardeners, overtaking not only patios but also lawns and fences. While many turn to pressure washers to tackle moss, using this powerful appliance incorrectly can lead to damage, especially on delicate surfaces like patios. Fortunately, experts recommend a more affordable and eco-friendly solution: white vinegar.

Rafi Friedman, CEO of Coastal Luxury Outdoors, and Delah Gomasi, managing director of MaidForYou, suggest that vinegar can effectively remove moss without the risk of damage or environmental harm. This simple yet powerful cleaning hack is gaining attention for its ease and low cost.

The Simple Vinegar Solution

According to Delah Gomasi, removing moss from outdoor areas like pavers and patios doesn’t need to be complicated or harmful to the environment. The key is in the right vinegar-to-water mixture. Delah advises mixing 65% water and 35% white vinegar, then spraying it directly onto the mossy areas. After waiting a few days, the moss will start to brown, making it easier to scrub away with a hard-bristled brush.

Before applying the solution, Rafi Friedman suggests preparing the patio by clearing it of any furniture, grills, potted plants, or other items. Once the area is cleared, thoroughly sweep the surface with a push broom to remove debris. Rafi also offers a slightly different approach to the vinegar mixture: a 1:1 ratio of vinegar and water in a spray bottle. He advises thoroughly soaking the mossy areas and allowing the mixture to sit for 10 to 30 minutes.

Once the time has passed, scrub the moss away using a bristle brush and rinse the patio with water from a garden hose. Allow the surface to dry before placing any furniture or items back onto it.

Important Tips for Best Results

Avoid spraying surrounding plants or grass, as the vinegar mixture can damage them. Focus only on the moss-covered areas.

If moss is trapped between pavers, it’s crucial not to pressure wash it, as this could dislodge the sand and dirt holding the pavers together. If pressure washing is necessary, experts recommend adding sand to the gaps after cleaning to maintain the integrity of the surface.

This simple, eco-friendly approach provides gardeners with a safe and effective way to deal with moss buildup on their patios without relying on harsh chemicals or expensive equipment. Whether you’re preparing for summer gatherings or simply want to maintain a cleaner outdoor space, vinegar can be an invaluable tool in your gardening toolkit.
