Spring cleaning is in full swing, and an unexpected kitchen essential may just be the key to a fresher, healthier home. Cleaning experts suggest that households can enjoy two significant benefits by sprinkling an unexpected spice in their vacuum cleaners.
After long periods of use, vacuum cleaners can start to smell unpleasant. This can be due to pet hair, dust or general dirt buildup, and sometimes vacuuming can remove more odors than it actually removes. However, before considering an expensive air freshener or filter, experts recommend cleaning out your spice rack first.
The cleaning experts at Lottomart claim that cinnamon is a “powerful natural deodorizer with antibacterial properties” that can work wonders when added to cleaning equipment.
They explain: “Over time, dust, pet hair and accumulated dirt can become a breeding ground for bacteria and unpleasant odors inside your vacuum cleaner. Cinnamon isn’t just for cooking – it eliminates unpleasant odors at the source while leaving behind a warm, subtle fragrance.”
To perform this trick, take a small napkin or cotton pad and moisten it with warm water. Sprinkle about 10 grams (about two teaspoons) of cinnamon powder onto the fabric and gently rub it in. Place the cinnamon-soaked pad into the bag or dust box of your vacuum cleaner, making sure it doesn’t hinder suction.
If you have a bagless model, simply place it in the dustbin. To try this trick, simply vacuum as you normally would.
As the cinnamon-soaked napkin cycles through the machine, it releases a warm, inviting aroma reminiscent of baked goods while also fighting off harmful bacteria.
Cinnamon contains natural compounds, including flavonoids, saponins and cinnamaldehyde, which have been shown to have antimicrobial properties.
Cinnamon bark is also used in traditional medicine for its antibacterial properties. It’s also affordable, as you can buy a box of cinnamon powder in most supermarkets for just £1, making it one of the most affordable cleaning solutions.
A spokesperson for Lottomart noted: “Its scent is more pleasant and long-lasting than synthetic alternatives, and it also has antibacterial properties.”
Sprinkling cinnamon is not only effortless, but also completely natural, with no need for harsh artificial fragrances or expensive air fresheners. The light aroma released while cleaning can instantly make your space feel more welcoming.
