The La Salle City Council has approved the purchase of a New Elgin Pelican NP Street Sweeper for $323,830, marking the replacement of an 18-year-old sweeper that has far exceeded its 10-year life expectancy.
During June’s budget hearing, Finance Director John Duncan highlighted the urgent need for a new street sweeper, noting that the city’s current equipment had been in operation for nearly twice its intended lifespan. To prepare for this significant expenditure, Duncan had included a preliminary budget estimate of $360,000, ensuring that funds would be available for either purchasing or leasing the new sweeper.
At Monday’s Finance Meeting, Alderman John ‘Doc’ Lavieri reported that while the city explored leasing options, outright purchase was determined to be the most cost-effective solution. City Works Director Kevin Fay added that the new sweeper comes with a four-year maintenance package and a lifetime warranty on the hopper, which can be conveniently dumped into a dump truck.
Fay also noted that while the city will need to replace broom heads, sprayer nozzles, and the internal belt, major components like the larger broom will be covered under the maintenance agreement.
Alderman Jordan Crane expressed his support for the new sweeper model, citing the maintenance agreement as a significant advantage. “We have a four-year maintenance agreement,” Crane said. “After four years, if we don’t like it, we can always go back. Plus, it’s $100,000 cheaper than our current style, so I think we should try it out.”
Crane also emphasized that his thorough investigation into the condition of the current sweeper revealed no external factors contributing to its deterioration, reinforcing the need for a new and more reliable machine.
