Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional Airport is set to benefit from a substantial federal allocation exceeding half a million dollars, as part of the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program. The program, distributing over $6.7 million across Mississippi’s airports, aims to enhance infrastructure and safety measures statewide.
Among the recipients, Hattiesburg-Laurel Airport has been granted $607,150, earmarked for the acquisition of a new “Foreign Object Debris” sweeper and the reconstruction of apron lighting in Moselle.
United States Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) emphasized the significance of these investments, stating, “Safety and system upgrades will provide a better experience for travelers and support economic growth opportunities in Mississippi. These investments will pay dividends for our state’s future.”
In total, the funding will be divided among 17 airports in Mississippi, enabling upgrades to runways, taxiways, lighting systems, and the acquisition of new safety and navigation equipment.
Dean Griffin Memorial Airport in Wiggins is another beneficiary of the latest AIP grants, securing $352,768 for projects including the replacement of the airport’s rotating beacon, reconstruction of existing lighting, installation of a new wind cone/segmented circle navigational aid, and implementation of a precision approach path indicator system.
The FAA will oversee the distribution and implementation of these grants, which are poised to enhance operational capabilities and safety standards across Mississippi’s aviation infrastructure.
