Galway City has introduced the region’s first electric street sweeper as part of its broader Climate Plan. This initiative aligns with the Galway City Council’s commitment to transitioning to a fully decarbonized vehicle fleet by 2030.
The new electric sweeper will replace outdated diesel models and is a significant addition to the council’s existing fleet of electric vehicles, which includes 20 electric vans. This move underscores the council’s ongoing effort to phase out fossil fuel-powered vehicles in favor of electric alternatives.
The introduction of this sweeper marks a milestone, being the first of its kind in any local authority in the West of Ireland. It is a key component of the Galway City Council’s Climate Action Plan, which was launched earlier this year. The plan outlines ambitious objectives, including a 51% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from both council operations and the broader city by 2030, with a target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
