Roborock’s New Tech Challenges Roomba: A Leap Toward Multi-Floor Navigation

by BERG

Autonomous vacuum cleaners, particularly from iRobot—the Massachusetts-based leader behind the popular Roomba series—are already capable of sophisticated tasks. These devices navigate around household obstacles, perform regular cleaning schedules, and respond to voice commands for targeted cleaning.

Historically, however, these self-navigating robots have faced limitations, particularly with stairs, confining them to a single floor. This could be about to change, thanks to a groundbreaking development from one of iRobot’s major competitors.

At IFA 2024, Europe’s premier consumer technology exhibition, Roborock unveiled its AdaptiLift Chassis system. This innovative feature enables their latest vacuum models to overcome small obstacles such as ledges and thresholds up to four centimeters high—an advancement that could significantly enhance the versatility of robot vacuums.

Roborock, celebrating its 10th anniversary at the event, introduced the Qrevo Curv and Qrevo Edge, both equipped with this new AdaptiLift Chassis system. This system allows the vacuum to adjust its height on all sides, facilitating access over obstacles like sled-leg tables, raised thresholds, and thick carpets. When encountering issues, these robots alert users via smartphone notifications to address any blockages.

Both the Qrevo Curv and Qrevo Edge deliver an impressive 18,500Pa of suction power, a notable improvement from earlier models, and approaching the performance of traditional household vacuums. Additionally, they feature a Dual Anti-Tangle System to prevent hair from clogging the rollers.

However, this advanced technology comes with a premium price tag. The Qrevo Curv starts at €1,499.99 (approximately £1,265, though UK pricing is yet to be confirmed).

Meanwhile, iRobot is also making headlines with its final summer sale. Discounts of up to £500 are available on select Roomba models until September 16. The Roomba Combo Essential, a versatile 2-in-1 vacuum and mop, is now available for £169, down from £269. The sale also includes the Roomba j9+ Robot Vacuum and Mop, reduced from £1,249 to £749, offering AI-driven cleaning prioritization and a self-emptying dock.
